Car Insurance: Basic Minimum Required
Maybe you don't like being forced to get insurance and just want to get the minimum you need to keep the authorities off your back. No problem. For cars, there are two kinds of minimum, basic insurance: The first is Mandatory Auto Liability insurance required by the State of California. All vehicles registered in CA must have basic, minimum liability insurance so that if you have an accident and it's your fault, there will be a little insurance money to pay the other guy for damage to his car or injury to himself or his passengers. The second required auto insurance is necessary if you have a loan on your car. The finance company requires that you carry Comprehensive and Collision coverage to pay for any damage or loss to "your" car, which is to say that if you still owe money on it, it's THEIR car until it's paid off. In the event that the car is stolen or totaled, or both, then the bank or finance company gets paid first, before you do.
